Psychophysiology Laboratory
The Department has a BIOPAC MP36 unit available for the collection and analysis of physiological data. The unit is capable of recording:
- Heart rate, via basic electrocardiography (ECG/EKG)
- 'Brain waves', via basic electroencephalography (EEG)
- Muscle activity, including facial expressions, eye blinks and startle responses, via electromyography (EMG)
- Pulse rate
- Electrodermal activity (EDA), also known as skin conductance or galvanic skin response (GSR)
- Respiratory rate and effort
- Peripheral blood pressure, via a digital sphygmomanometer and stethoscope
The BIOPAC is user-friendly, but analysing the data it produces is very labour-intensive. It is therefore currently for use by staff and exceptional undergraduate assistants.
