Mechanical
Engineering Department
Principles
of the Implementation of Industrial Summer Trainings
This document
covers the implementation of industrial internship (summer training) for the
students of Mechanical Engineering Department according to the Regulations which
was set by Işık University Senate. There are two compulsory industrial
internships in Mechanical, Mechatronics and Automotive Engineering
undergraduate programs during their summer vacations of students.
1. ME290/MCE290/AUE290 Summer Training-I
(For sophomores and at the end of 4th
semester normally)
It is performed in an
industrial company which has sufficient infrastructure in mechanical,
mechatronics and/or automotive engineering for minimum 20 workdays. Manufacturing,
assembly and quality control activities should be covered during this
summer training.
The students are
expected to gain the following knowledge and skills (outcomes) at the end of
this activity:
1. Know
implementations of manufacturing and assembly processes,
2. Gain
awareness of quality control processes in manufacturing,
3. Be
acquainted with organizational structure of manufacturing corporations,
4. Write a report about
training activities in Turkish. (Note: Report language is English
for foreign students and the students who performed their training activities
abroad)
2. ME390/MCE390/AUE390 Summer Training-II
(For juniors and at the end of 6th
semester normally)
It is performed in an
industrial company which has sufficient infrastructure in mechanical,
mechatronics and/or automotive engineering for minimum 20 workdays. Design,
research & development, management and organizational activities should
be covered during this summer training.
The students are
expected to gain the following knowledge and skills (outcomes) at the end of
this activity:
1. Be
acquainted with Work Planning, Design and Research & Development types of
activities,
2. Gain
experience about the effects of engineering implementations on non-technical
units of the organizations,
3. Write a report about
training activities in Turkish. (Note: Report language is English
for foreign students and the students who performed their training activities
abroad)
Training Period
Summer training will be done normally
during academic vacations. Sundays and/or official holidays will not be
accounted for the training. However, if a full day shift
on Saturdays is present then an official letter which is explaining the
situation and written by the company must be sent to Mechanical Engineering
Department.
Senior standing students who
have minimum three weekdays free (i.e. there is no lecture, laboratory, exam
load in those days) can perform their training activities during academic year
and/or summer course.
Training Place
Training must be done in a
public or private company which is suitable to the program of the student
(Mechanical, mechatronics or automotive). Trainings can be done in internal or
foreign companies. The host companies must have at least two full time
engineers and one of them must be mechanical engineer strictly. Working in the
same company during Summer Trainings I and II are subjected to the consent of
the department.
Application
To find companies for summer
training activities is one of the important responsibilities of students.
Therefore, the application to find a training place will be done by students.
If there will be a necessity to supply a document to proceed the request, the
students can obtain an official letter from Dean's Office for this purpose. The
determination of training place is subjected to the approval by the
department, according to their qualifications of the companies satisfying
the criteria of internship for Mechanical/Mechatronics/Automotive Engineering
students.
Internship Form will be downloaded from the
web site of the department in three copies and filled by the student
after the approval of training company. The copies of Internship Form will be
signed and approved by the company. All three copies will be approved by
Department Head, Faculty Dean and Human Resources Division respectively. One of
the copies will be held by Human Resources Department, one of the copies will
be submitted to the host company and the last copy is remained with the
student. This copy should be submitted to the department with the Training
Report of the student at the end of the activity.
Internship Responsibilities
Students are responsible from
the filling and sending to the department of Internship
Evaluation Form by the authorities of the host company. Students also
will write a report explaining the activities which have been carried out after
the completion of the training. The report should be approved by one of the
authorities of the company.
After training
The Training Report,
Internship Evaluation Form and the last copy of Internship Form should be
submitted to Mechanical Engineering Department before the end of Add/Drop Week.
The report will not be accepted unless all documents are not submitted
completely.
Assessment and Results of
Summer Training-I and II will be announced in the boards of the department. If
revision of a report is requested, the due date of submission of revised report
is the end of course withdrawal week.
If there will be hesitation about
the information covered by reports, the students may be asked to make an oral
explanation of the work carried out during the training in a detailed manner by
department.
