The 33rd IEEE Conference on Signal Processing and Communications Applications (SIU), hosted by our university, brought together leading academics, industry representatives and students. The event took place at our Şile Campus,with a high level of participation and in a great atmosphere.
The opening speeches of the conference were delivered by Prof. Dr. Onur Kaya, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and Chairman of the Conference; Prof. Dr. Hasan Bülent Kahraman, Rector; and Mehmet Serdar Sarıgül, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
During the conference, prominent figures from the sector shared their industry experiences with participants at the opening. These included Dr. Yusuf Bora Kartal, ASELSAN's Assistant General Manager and Head of the HBT Sector; Prof. Dr. Vehbi Çağrı Güngör, Turkcell's Assistant General Manager; and Gökhan Evren, Türk Telekom's Assistant General Manager of Information Technologies. They were presented with plaques for their valuable contributions.
One of the most distinguished guests of the conference was MIT Ford Professor Alan V. Oppenheim, a pioneer and living legend in digital signal processing. Oppenheim garnered significant interest by sharing his knowledge and experiences in a special session with participants.
Organized this year for the first time, the National Undergraduate Projects Exhibitionbrought together the original and innovative work of future engineers with a wide range of attendees. The four-day conference also included simultaneous technical sessions, exclusive panels, and presentations, where specialists from diverse industries shared their insights and expertise. During the opening cocktail reception at the Şile campus, the undergraduate students who were ranked in the National Undergraduate Project Competition were honored with awards.
On the second day of the conference, attendees had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Burak Göktürk, Google's Vice President of Machine Learning, Systems, and Cloud AI Research, and Prof. Dr. Aylin Yener, a "Chair Professor" at Ohio State University and a pioneer in wireless, secure, and semantic communication.
On the third day of the conference, attendees at the Şile campus met with keynote speaker Prof. Mathews Jacob from the University of Virginia, along with Prof. Dr. Hitay Özbay from Bilkent University, and invited industry speaker Dr. Defne Küçükyavuz, a Senior Chief Engineer at ASELSAN.
During the conference, the following panels were held;
One6G Paneli, moderated by Tunçer Baykaş, with the participation of Mona Ghassemian (Huawei), Mehmet Başaran (Turkcell), and Selami Çiftçi (Türk Telekom);
IEEE WIE Paneli, with the participation of Mona Ghassemian (Huawei), Sinem Çöleri (Koç Üniversitesi), and Nazlı Güney (Türk Telekom);
Artificial Intelligence Applications in Education Panel with the participation of Prof. Dr. Orhan Arıkan from Bilkent Universit, and Dr. Emre Güven from Cognizen.
Graduate students, both master's and doctoral candidates, delivered five-minute thesis presentations. Plaques were awarded to the students who ranked.
The 33rd IEEE SIU Gala Dinner was also held as part of the conference. Before the gala, Şile Mayor Özgür Kabadayı, who attended the cocktail, was presented with a plaque of appreciation by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mehmet Serdar Sarıgül for Şile Municipality's valuable contributions to the conference. At the event, awards were presented to the members of the conference committee for their dedicated work, and to the participants who ranked in the paper and thesis presentations.
On the fourth day of the conference, participants concluded the program with an enjoyable trip, exploring Şile's natural and cultural beauty.
