Psychophysiology Laboratory

Our department has a BIOPAC MP36 unit for physiological data collection and analysis. This unit can take the following measurements:

  • Heartbeat, basic electrocardiography (ECG/ECG)
  • 'Brain waves', basic electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Muscle movements such as facial expression, blinking and startle responses, and electromyography (EMG)
  • Pulse beat
  • Electrodermal activity (EDA), also known as skin conductance or galvanic skin response (GSR)
  • Respiratory rate and effort
  • Peripheral blood pressure (blood pressure), digital sphygmomanometer and stethoscope

BIOPAC is easy to use, but the analysis of the data it generates is labor intensive. For this reason, it is currently only available to faculty members and some successful undergraduate assistants.
