Internship Directive

Objective

This Internship Directive outlines the general principles governing compulsory internships within undergraduate and associate degree programs at Işık University Faculties and Vocational Schools. These internships are conducted in accordance with the principles established in the relevant education and training regulations.

Definition
2.1 Purpose of Internships
Internships are designed to provide students with practical experience by applying theoretical knowledge gained during their undergraduate or associate degree education to real-world working environments. These internships take place in private or public institutions, both in Turkey and abroad, that specialize in a particular field of study. The time, duration, and subject matter of the internship are determined by the relevant departments/programs, in alignment with the principles outlined in this directive.

2.2 Internship Timing
Internships are typically conducted during academic holidays. However, senior students who are free for at least three full working days per week (with no scheduled lectures, laboratories, exams, or project presentations on those days) may complete their internships during the academic year or summer semester.
Provision and Allocation of Internship Placements

3.1 Internship Placement Opportunities
Internship opportunities are available in both domestic and international private and public institutions that have announced internship quotas and whose internship areas are approved by the relevant department/program. These placements are announced to students and assigned based on their applications.

3.2 Student-Proposed Internship Placements
Students may arrange their own internship placements, provided that the department/program chair deems them appropriate. The proposed institution must have at least two full-time staff members in the relevant department for the internship to be approved.

3.3 Internships in University Laboratories
A maximum of 20 working days of internship may be completed in university laboratories or at the application centers of other universities if the department/program demonstrates a specific need or benefit for the student.
Internship Procedures

4.1 Internship Approval and Social Security Procedures
Students whose internship placements are approved must complete the necessary social security procedures at least 20 days before the internship starts and submit the Compulsory Internship Form to the relevant university offices.

4.2 Internship Report
Students are required to prepare an Internship Report in Turkish (or in English for overseas internships or as approved by the institution). This report must follow the guidelines established by the department/program and be approved by the internship supervisor at the host institution.

4.3 Submission of Internship Documents
Upon completing the internship, students must obtain a sealed Internship Evaluation Document, filled out and approved by their internship supervisor. This, along with:

  • The Internship Report
  • A copy of the Compulsory Internship Form
must be submitted to the department/program secretariat by the end of the add/drop week of the following semester at the latest.

4.4 Supervision of Internship Work
Departments/programs may inspect and supervise students' work at their internship placements when necessary.

4.5 Internship Requirement Confirmation Letter
If an internship institution requests proof that the internship is compulsory, students may obtain an Internship Requirement Confirmation Letter, signed by the Dean, Vocational School Director, or Department/Program Chair.

Evaluation of Internship Work

5.1 Evaluation Process
The department/program board assigns faculty members or staff to review and evaluate internship reports and documents. The secretariat of the department/ program manages the administrative aspects of the evaluation process.

5.2 Internship Grading and Corrections
The evaluation process is completed within one month after submission. Based on the evaluation, an internship may be:

  • Accepted
  • Returned for corrections (students must submit the revised version by the course withdrawal deadline)
  • Rejected

5.3 Grading System
Accepted internships are recorded in the student's transcript with a grade of "P" (Pass).

5.4 Document Retention
Approved Internship Reports are stored by the relevant department/program for a minimum of two years.

5.5 Special Cases
For issues not covered in this directive, decisions regarding internship evaluations and exemptions are made by the Faculty or Vocational School Board.
