What is an Internship?

An internship is a preparatory phase for professional life that allows students to:

  • Apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned in their academic programs,
  • Gain practical experience in real work environments,
  • Learn about organizational structures and operations,
  • Prepare for their transition into the job market.

Internships serve as the first step in a professional career. When approached strategically, they can give candidates a competitive advantage in job applications, helping them stand out among numerous applicants.

The quality of your internship experience depends on you. Internships done without interest or dedication just to fulfill requirements are a waste of time. Today’s job market values hardworking, determined, innovative, and adaptable employees. Employers want to see what sets you apart from others

How to Prepare for an Internship?

 Discover Yourself
When planning your career path, take time to reflect on your skills and interests. Success comes from enjoying what you do. Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and work on improving your weaker areas.

STAJ
  • Define your values and do not compromise on what you believe is right.
  • Visualize your future. Picture yourself at your dream job: What are you wearing on your first day? What does your desk look like? Imagine yourself receiving an award for a successful project. These visualizations will keep you motivated, even on your toughest days.
  • Plan your career journey. Identify what you need to improve (e.g., learning a foreign language, studying abroad) and take action.
  • Prepare yourself for challenges. Understand that obstacles will arise, but trust that you have the strength to overcome them.

✔ Choose a field that suits you and explore internship opportunities.
✔ Set learning goals to improve your knowledge and skills during the internship.
✔ Prepare to showcase your abilities in the company where you will intern.

Develop Yourself

  • Seek knowledge and experience. Observe the best professionals in your field and engage with them. People who see your enthusiasm will support and guide you.
  • Attend seminars, panels, fairs, and workshops led by industry experts.
  • Stay updated on new technologies, social trends, and global developments related to your field.
  • Take part in university or social responsibility projects. List these experiences in your CV.
  • Employers value candidates who are active in their social lives, not just academically strong. Engaging in sports, theater, or clubs can boost both your resume and mental well-being.
  • Have a backup plan. If you realize that a certain career path is not right for you, be prepared to pivot and explore alternative fields.

Take Action

  •  Build your network. Research leading companies in your field and list their contact details. Seek guidance from professors, the Career Center, the Internship Coordination Office, and your personal network.
  • Use multiple channels to apply. Contact companies via email, phone, and LinkedIn.
  • Ensure your email address looks professional. Avoid using informal addresses like coolguy@...com or pinkprincess@...com. Instead, use a format like firstname.lastname@...com or your university-provided email.
  • Don’t underestimate yourself. If you think, "I need connections to get an internship," challenge that belief! Remember, every journey starts with a single step. Take initiative and apply!

Interview Preparation

Before the Interview

  • Research the company. Learn about its mission, vision, leadership, industry, and market position from its website and take notes.
  • Bring a printed copy of your CV. Interviewers will ask questions based on your resume. Providing incorrect information due to nervousness may create inconsistencies. Having your CV on hand will help you stay on track.
MÜLAKATA HAZIRLIK
  •   Plan your outfit in advance. Avoid excessive makeup, strong perfume, or revealing clothing.
  • Maintain a neat appearance. A clean hairstyle, light makeup, and a fresh, subtle fragrance will leave a good impression.
  • Eat something before the interview. Avoid acidic drinks and foods that cause bad breath.
  • Be mindful of alcohol consumption the night before. Arriving at an interview hungover will leave a terrible impression.
  • Arrive early. Rushing in at the last minute will make you feel flustered and less confident.
  • Have the company’s contact details. If you anticipate being late, notify them in advance. Failing to show up without notice may place you on a blacklist.
  • Go alone. Attending an interview with family or friends can make you appear lacking in confidence.
  • Silence your phone.

  • Stick to relevant details. Keep your responses clear and concise
  • Maintain good posture. Sit with your arms open rather than crossed in your lap
  • Make eye contact and smile naturally. A stiff, frowning expression can be off-putting

  • Avoid chewing gum or candies during the interview.
