Bu dersin amacı: Ahlaklı bir hayat nasıl tanımlanır? İyi ve erdemli birey kimdir? “İyi” ve “kötü”, “doğru” ve “yanlış” arasındaki çizgiyi kim belirler? İyi yurttaş kimdir? Bir yurttaş olarak, kadın/erkek olarak, toplum üyesi olarak hayatlarımızı nasıl yaşamamız gerekir? Modern birey kimdir? Teknoloji, ahlaki yargılarımızı nasıl etkiler? Etik, hukuk, ahlak ve kültürel alanları ilgilendiren bu tarz sorgulamaları günlük hayatımızda sıklıkla yapmaktayız. Bu ders, bu tür soruları tartışmak amacıyla birey ve yurttaş olmanın anlamlarına değinmekte; toplumsal hayatın düzenleyici bileşenlerini ahlak, hukuk, etik ve normlar ile ilişkilendirerek tartışmakta; birey ve iktidar arasındaki ilişkiyi devlet, toplumsal cinsiyet, aile, din ve gözetim gibi konular üzerinden ele almaktadır. Ayrıca, modernleşme kavramını merkeze alarak, değer yargılarının “evrensel” boyuttaki inşasını Doğu ve Batı kültürleri arasındaki iktidar ilişkileri bağlamında sorgulamaktadır.
