Internship Application Guidelines

Internship Application Guidelines for the Department of Mechanical Engineering

This document outlines the principles for the implementation of the Internship Regulations determined by the Işık University Senate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. According to these regulations, students in the Mechanical/Automotive/Mechatronics Engineering programs are required to complete two internships.

13920 (2910-290) Internship (At the end of the 4th semester for second-year students)

This internship involves a minimum of 20 working days at an appropriate organization, focusing on manufacturing, assembly, and quality control activities. The internship must be documented in a report.

By the end of this internship, students are expected to gain the following knowledge and skills:

  1. Understanding the applications of various manufacturing methods.
  2. Gaining awareness of quality control practices.
  3. Understanding the organizational structure of manufacturing enterprises.
  4. Reporting internship activities in Turkish (Note: For foreign students and/or internships conducted in foreign countries, the report must be written in English).

2.4920 (3910-390) Internship (At the end of the 6th semester for third-year students)

This internship involves a minimum of 20 working days at an appropriate organization to gain knowledge about design, management, and organizational processes, perform practical work, and document these activities in a report.

By the end of this internship, students are expected to gain the following knowledge and skills:

  1. Observing and participating in R&D and product development activities.
  2. Gaining experience in engineering roles such as business planning, design, and quality control.
  3. Understanding the impact of engineering applications on non-engineering organizational units.
  4. Reporting internship activities in Turkish (Note: For foreign students and/or internships conducted in foreign countries, the report must be written in English).

Internship Dates

Internships are typically conducted during academic breaks. Work performed on Sundays and public holidays is not counted towards the internship period. However, if full-time work is performed on Saturdays, an official letter from the institution confirming this must be submitted to the department.

Final-year students who have at least three full working days available per week (without any scheduled classes, labs, problem-solving sessions, project presentations, midterms, final exams, or make-up exams) may complete their internships during the academic year or summer school. Other students may also complete their internships during summer school, provided they meet the same conditions.

Internship Location

Internships must be conducted in a public or private sector organization related to mechanical, automotive, or mechatronics engineering. Internships can be completed in Turkey or abroad. The organization must employ at least two full-time engineers, one of whom must be a mechanical engineer. Performing both mandatory internships at the same organization requires departmental approval.

Application Process

Internship applications serve as a trial for entering the professional workforce. Contacting companies for internship opportunities is similar to applying for a full-time job. Therefore, students should approach applications and interviews with professionalism.

If internship positions are allocated to the department by public and private sector institutions, academic performance is considered when distributing these positions to students.

Students must apply to organizations for internships personally. If an official introductory letter is required for the internship application, it can be obtained from the Dean’s Office.

Students can consult the department to confirm whether an internship location is suitable for their program. It is important to note that students cannot start their internship without departmental approval, and unauthorized internships will not be accepted.

Once the internship location is confirmed, students must download the Mandatory Internship Form from the department's website, complete three copies, attach a passport-sized photo to each, and sign them personally.

The three Mandatory Internship Forms must then be approved by the internship organization. Afterward, these forms are submitted to the department for approval, and one photocopy is kept by the department. Following approval by the Dean’s Office, the same forms are submitted to the Personnel Department for Social Security (SGK) premium processing. In addition, students must submit two passport-sized photos and a copy of their ID card to the Personnel Department. After final approval, one copy of the internship form is kept by the student (to be submitted with the internship report), one is kept by the Personnel Department, and one is given to the internship organization.

The Mandatory Internship Forms must be approved by the Personnel Department at least 14 days before the internship start date.

Starting the Internship

Internship students must download the Internship Evaluation Form from the department's website and bring it, along with the Mandatory Internship Form, to their workplace at the start of their internship.

Upon completing the internship, students must ensure that the Internship Evaluation Form is completed and approved by their supervisor at the organization. The completed form must be submitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Işık University in a sealed envelope.

It is strongly recommended that students complete their Internship Report during the internship period and have it approved by their supervisor at the organization along with the Internship Evaluation Form.

After the Internship

At the end of the internship, the Internship Evaluation Form must be completed and signed by the workplace supervisor. It should then be placed in a sealed envelope and submitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Işık University either in person (by the student) or by mail.

The Internship Report, which must be prepared in accordance with the required format and content and approved by the workplace supervisor, must be submitted along with:

  • The original Mandatory Internship Form, and
  • The sealed Internship Evaluation Form

Internship reports must be prepared in Turkish, except for foreign students and/or students who complete their internships abroad. The Department Chair has the authority to accept, reject, or request revisions to reports that do not comply with the rules or are submitted late. If there are doubts regarding the accuracy of the information in the internship report, students may be required to verbally defend their internship work before the department.
