Our Alumna Becomes the First Parliament Member of Turkish Descent in the Canadian Parliament

Şima Açan, who graduated from Işık High School in 1997 and from our University’s Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electronics Engineering in 2003, has made history by becoming the first parliamentarian of Turkish descent elected to the Canadian Parliament, representing the Oakville West district.

Açan, who has stood out for her success in the fields of engineering and innovation, is the owner of a local robotics company. She has also made valuable contributions to community service through her roles as President of the Oakville Lions Club, as a volunteer with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, and in local schools.

Şima Açan, who has achieved great success in engineering, business, and community service, has marked an important milestone by becoming the first Turkish-origin woman elected to the Canadian Parliament.
